In a study designed to evaluate the safety of fentanyl use during transport of pediatric trauma patients (15 years of age or younger). Devellis et al retrospectively reviewed the transport records of all pediatric trauma patients transported from accident scenes in the Boston area between October 1991 and March 1997. Excluded from study were patients who received fentanyl concurrently with other agents, specifically paralytics and amnestics.
Two hundred eleven doses of fentanyl (0.335micrograms/kg) were administered to 131 patients with a mean age of 6.2 years (range 0.1 to 14 years), a median Glasgow coma score of 9 (range 3 to 15) and a mean pediatric trauma score of 8.3+/2.4 (range 6 to +12). Sixty percent of patients were intubated and received 139 (66%)
