To evaluate the utility of Doppler ultrasound for diagnosing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), the authors from the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto studied 62 neonates, 32 of whom had clinically proven or suspected NEC and 30 control neonates. Enrolled patients had gestational ages ranging from 24 to 41 weeks. Normative values of ultrasound of the bowel were calculated in the control neonates, and in those suspected of having NEC, the sensitivities and specificities of color Doppler ultrasound and abdominal radiography for detection of bowel necrosis were compared using a modified Bell staging criterion,1 which is a composite of clinical signs . . .
